LOVES SONGS
Les chansons d'amour

The wonderfully satisfying new film from
Christophe Honoré (Inside Paris) is a
formidably charming romance about love
and loss in contemporary Paris – with, as
the title suggests - music! The film follows
a few months in the life of Ismaël, played
by the floppy-haired Louis Garrel, who
seems to be competing strongly with
Romain Duris for the title of France's
favourite art-house pin-up boy.
Ismael and Julie (Ludivine Sagnier) are
beautiful twenty-somethings who find that
their relationship is becoming a little flat
after eight years. Bringing Alice, Ismael's
co-worker, into the relationship has
created a comfortable menage-à-trois, but
has made other issues more apparent.
But then tragedy strikes... How will Louis
make sense of the world – and with
whom?
Strong supporting turns from Chiara
Mastroianni, Clotilde Hesme, Yannick
Reniere and – especially - young
Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet make Love
Songs a joyous ode to l'amour, and the
risks and rewards of keeping an open
heart (and mind).
