THE SECRET OF THE GRAIN
La graine et le mulet

One of the most outstanding and critically
acclaimed French films of the year comes
from celebrated director Abdellatif
Kechiche, whose L'esquive stormed the
Cesars in 2005 (winning four awards
including Best Film). This new drama - a
touching and resoundingly humanistic
story set in a small harbour in the southeast
of France - cements his reputation.
We are introduced to 61-year-old
Slimane, who has been left demoralised
after being laid off from his job of 35 years
at the local shipyard. Deciding to pursue
his long cherished dream of opening a
cous-cous restaurant, he begins the
considerable task of persuading those
around him, including his family, that the
venture has a future.
A grand film about ordinary people,
Kechiche's creation is a slow-burning
drama drenched with humanity.
Comparisons to the classic neo-realism
cinema of Renoir and Casavettes are
thoroughly deserved. Not to be missed.
