WATER LILIES
Naissance des Pieuvres

One of the standout discoveries of the
2007 Cannes Film Festival was this very
impressively realized drama from writerdirector
Celine Sciamma – a fiercely
perceptive account of the aching doubts,
crushes and offhanded cruelty of
adolescent girls.
It's summer in the suburbs, and the town's
swimming pool is the centre of attention.
Marie, Anne and Floriane are 15,
beginning to experience the pangs of
nascent sexuality. Anne (Blachère)
fancies a boy, François, but he only has
eyes for Floriane. Marie (Acquart) is
similarly captivated by Floriane, and
neglects her friendship with Anne as a
result. And as for Floriane (Haenel), she's
so adept at using her physical charms to
manipulate, that her true desires are hard
to fathom...
Water Lilies is drenched with meaningful
subtext, but offers direct pleasures as a
(sometimes frighteningly) perceptive
portrait of how hard it is to be a teen girl in
the exploratory routes to womanhood.
The depiction of the character's sexual
rituals is quite frank, but never
exploitative.
