Inspired by novelist Georges Simenon's beloved Jules Maigret character, master French New Wave director Claude Chabrol joins forces with Gérard Depardieu for this playfully witty cop thriller.

Paul Bellamy (Depardieu) is an eminent detective taking a holiday in Nîmes with his wife but is unable to switch off his crime-solving instinct. Bellamy's curiosity is piqued by the murky case of a mysterious stranger who demands his protection. His situation is complicated further when his troublesome brother turns up unannounced.

As usual, Chabrol is less interested in the whodunit as in exploring his characters' hypocrisies and motivations. Though posing as a crime thriller, the film is actually a sharp-witted and devious study of unresolved familial jealousy and anger. This mischievous and droll film is remarkably, the first ever collaboration between two of the indisputable French cinema giants, Chabrol and Depardieu, and they take to each other like a treat.
