Kristin Scott Thomas delivers yet another French-language tour-de-force
in this simmering tale depicting a bourgeois wife and mother abandoning
her respectable life for passion.
Forty-something Suzanne is the wife of a doctor, and the mother of two
teenagers. Bored with her life, she decides to go back to work as a
physiotherapist, and her husband Samuel agrees that they can fix up a
consulting room for her in an annex of their house. The man in charge of
the work is a Spanish labourer, Ivan, working illegally after a spell in prison.
When Suzanne meets Ivan the connection is electric, and she is soon
caught up in a turbulent affair. Samuel reacts badly – but his attempts to
keep her are matched in their extremity by Suzanne's headlong rush to
shed all vestiges of her former life, regardless of the cost.
Director Catherine Corsini is no stranger to making films with complex
female protagonists, and her story of wilful female passion is made all
the more engrossing by the bold performances of her high-calibre cast.
