Xavier Giannoli ("The Singer") returns to the Festival with IN THE
BEGINNING, a drama set in Northern France based on the true story of
a smalltime swindler who deceives a whole region in economic crisis by
starting a huge motorway construction.
A conman passes himself off as the boss of a construction site building a
highway extension. In the beginning, he hopes just to make a little cash,
but his scam escapes his control. He cons the whole region, hires dozens
of workers and cynically enjoys the profits of his scam until he meets the
mayor of a small village that his road will go through. She intrigues and
unsettles him, before revealing to him a world he never knew: feelings.
How far will he go to save his victims and himself from his own lies?
Both epic and personal, Cannes award-winning director Xavier Giannoli
confirms his status as one of France's hottest filmmakers with this lovely,
keenly observed blend of social critique, character drama and crime.
Cluzet and Devos shine, as does Gerard Depardieu in a crucial role.
